Phoenix Holds 19th Annual 9/11 Memorial Ceremony
The city of Phoenix held its 19th annual 9/11 memorial ceremony at the Phoenix Fire Training Academy. Normally held at Phoenix City Hall, the ceremony was closed to the public but was livestreamed on the city's and police department's Facebook pages aside from PHX TV (Cox 11/CL 8005).
City, police and fire officials observed social distancing while wearing masks during the event. The ceremony started at 9 a.m. with a moment of silence and a prayer in remembrance of the 2,977 people who lost their lives on that fateful day in 2001, including 343 firefighters and 60 police officers who stepped up and ultimately gave up their lives to save others.
Despite the distance between Arizona and New York City, officials recount how the Grand Canyon state assisted with the efforts by sending a team of four people from Arizona Task Force 1 to help with body recovery for two weeks.
The 9/11 ceremony was closed out with the sound of a bell honoring of the New York City Fire Department's 5-4 cadence, traditionally used to announce the passing of a firefighter. This was followed by "Amazing Grace" played from bagpipes outside with the American flag waved between two firetrucks against a backdrop of the hazy Phoenix sky and South Mountain.
