Five Arizona schools has been named this year's National Blue Ribbon Schools by the U.S. Department of Education, recognizing them as among the best in the country. From a pool of public and private elementary, middle, and high schools, the coveted award is given based on overall academic excellence or progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups.

Gilbert Classical Academy High School in Gilbert, Knox Gifted Academy in Chandler and Mesa Academy for Advanced Studies in Mesa were recognized for the former category while Franklin Junior High School also in Mesa and Vista College Preparatory in Phoenix were given the distinction for the latter.

349 U.S. schools were honored with the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program this year, with a total of more than 8,500 schools presented with this coveted award in 36 years. A symbol of exemplary teaching and learning, the award as well as its flag attest to the efforts of students, educators, families and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools conducive for mastering challenging content.
