Arizona continues to attract new residents in their 60s or older, with analysis of the latest census data from financial research website SmartAsset showing Valley cities making more than half their top ten list. Thanks to Phoenix, Scottsdale, Mesa, Gilbert, Surprise and Peoria drawing more than 1,000 new retiree residents each during 2016, Arizona went up from 27,576 residents older than 60 in 2015 to 28,614 in 2016.

And that's not the only list where Arizona ranked well for retirees- nine Arizona communities made it to 55places.com’s top 55+ Active Adult Communities. Out of these nine Arizona communities, eight are found in the Metropolitan Phoenix area.

Retirees started moving to Arizona when the first Sun City opened with a focus on golf. Nowadays, metro Phoenix attracts retirees not only with a diverse outdoor lifestyle that includes hiking but also sunny weather, relatively low taxes, friendly neighbors and of course, an affordable lifestyle.
